Stop Dieting and Start Eating

As a personal trainer and group fitness instructor, we are not licensed to counsel or create nutritional plans for our clients or members. However, what we CAN do is promote healthy eating and suggest yummy foods that are great to fuel the body!

Bottom line: we have to eat to live. How many of you reading this have told yourself "On Monday I'll start dieting”, or “By Monday, no more Cokes and candy bars.” Monday, no more carbs and only 1 meal a day.” “On Monday I'll start another 30 day challenge, one that actually ‘fits me’ this time.” Monday, Monday, Monday…does it ever end? There's no way we can start a diet or a new nutritional plan on a Wednesday or Thursday, right!? It HAS to be on a Monday. New week, new you. So, we all over eat until Sunday night, like we won't ever eat a another piece of pizza or go out for Mexican with our girlfriends EVER AGAIN.

As women we are all guilty of this. We are human and always have good intentions when we want to see change happen in our lives. But, this way of thinking is unrealistic for long term success – it is very unsustainable – and a lot of the time we’re just setting ourselves up for failure before we ever get started.

It has been programmed into our brains that we must cut calories and starve ourselves if we want to lose weight. In the last couple of years, the new trend are supplements and weight loss challenges –  great for short term success and to be involved with a group, but a lot of things are pretty much unrealistic for the long haul.

Ask yourself a question:

Has what you've been doing working for you?

Do you still have those Mondays where you decide that it’s finally the day you’re cutting something out of your diet and start an extreme way of eating? Are you purchasing another brand of supplements because all your friends switched to that brand because they saw a cute Instagram post and you feel you should too?  Are you starving yourself because you think that’s the only way you know how to lose the weight or reach your goals??

Trust me, I've been there! Many of times. (All the time?) As women we all feel pressured to look a certain way and join in on all the popular fads that come out. That’s just human nature. We all want to feel good, look good, and see results.

BUT, what if TODAY, you decided to take a different route?

What if you decided to learn about food groups and understand what carbs, fats, and proteins are, and how they fuel your body? What if you learned the harmful effects of sugar and how negatively sugar plays a role in your health, especially with cancer rates and joint pain? What if you learned to see food as a positive so that you feel good about eating and link it with a long term healthy nutritional lifestyle?

Educating yourself and becoming aware of what you eat and how it effects YOUR body is a must for long term success. Each and every (body) is different, so not everything will work for you. Hormones play a huge
factor when it comes to weight loss and we all have different relationships when it comes to food too.

Some of us binge eat because we are bored, some of us overeat when we're stressed out or upset, some reading this might have food allergies that cause you to be very food anxious, and others may not even know how to read a food label correctly or what to look for. At the end of the day it's all about education and learning what works for your body and your long-term health goals.

Food is not the enemy. Our relationship with food has become the enemy.

What if you looked in the mirror and really started loving yourself for who you are today and stop beating yourself up for the person you're not? Food should not be the enemy or something that makes us feel bad after a night out with friends or indulging in some holiday treats.

Research foods & nutritional plans and start eating whole foods, whole meals, and start thinking about what foods will work for you and your body and lifestyle. Start small and learn to find balance while educating yourself about using food as fuel. Our bodies are built for movement & endurance – trust that. Our bodies & mind will not perform well, feel well, or react well when we constantly abuse foods, over eat, extremely limit, or overuse supplements.

When you love & respect yourself fully, you'll start showing it by the food you eat and by the lifestyle you live.

*** If your relationship with food is distorted or if you feel you may have a serious issue with food or possibly feel you're within the scope of an eating disorder, I urge you to reach out for help. Be brave and do not feel ashamed. Reach out to a friend or a family member, someone you love and trust, and make an appointment with a registered dietician or licensed counselor.

With Love,
Nikki
